As a first-born, I'd like to say that not all children of my birth order desire objects, trinkets or things from our excursions. We can appreciate the event for the amazing experience it was (or wasn't) without the purchased item. However, as a part-time collector over many categories from as far back as I can remember, I have grown to realize that certain objects can access certain memories. When I hold my wedding photo album in my hands, for example, memories of that day come rushing back -- usually emotions that I don't recall when in general rumination. What people said...where I was standing...what I was thinking at the time.

I can't say whether that type of object appreciation is a first-born trait or a collector-in-training trait, but I do know that things can unlock memories and access synaptic highways like nothing else can. So let her keep the program, tickets, or some other 'freebie' from the Nutcracker play to post in her future scrapbook or journal and see if that suits her fancy.

I, too, have fond memories of Senora Bryant. She always had a smile on her face. She always seemed in a hurry to get somewhere. She always gave you a few minutes of her time even if you weren't one of her students.

May you remember her with the same joy that she had.
